  1. The Sony is a MiniDV tape based camcorder. Download the camcorder manual here:

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-d...

ALL miniDV tape based camcorders have a DV port. Refer to pages 81, 93, 149, or 173 for the location of the DV port. This is a 4-pin firewire port. Firewire, IEEE1394a, i.LINK and DV are all the same thing.

A firewire cable did not come in the box with the camcorder - thats whay all the illustrations that show it have it indicated "(optional"). You will need a 4-pin (camera DV port) to 6-pin (Mac's firewire 400 port) firewire cable. Connect the camcorder to your Mac with the firewire cable. The camera needs to be on (use the power supply so it is not running on battery power) - and the power button needs to be in the "VCR" position.

Launch iMovie. You should then be able to import DV video from the miniDV tape. You do not need to make any other chages to the default menu items in the camcorder. iMovie can control the fast-forward, rewind, and stop functions so you do not need to do that on the camcorder.

The USB cable is used only for copying stills off the memory stick. You do not need any other software from Sony.

All Apple Macintosh computers made in about the last 10 years came standard with a Firewire port. The only exception is the new MacBook Air.
