My dvd unit was playing and recording fine but suddenly now it wont play or record any disc either previously recorded on this unit or standard films. Every time I insert a disc it opens the draw and shows the message "cannot play this disc" I have tried unplugging and factory reset on menu, (although factory reset doesn't seem to do anything). Does this sound terminal?

  1. Hi John,

Unplug the unit and with a flashlight look in the DVD door and see if you can find the laser lens. It is a round piece of glass about 3/8" in diameter.

Once you locate it take a cotton swab and dip it in rubbing alcohol. You may need to tape the swab to a pencil ot a piece of coat hanger for a longer reach.

Wipe the lens with the swab and wait about five minutes to make sure any residue of alcohol has evaporated.

Plug in the unit and try it. I have resurrected many a DVD player with that method. It works on CD players too.

  2. Unplug completely and leave it along for a few hours 4 max. Then plugin all the power and connectors Do that factory reset again. Then try it out. Use another brand of blank media this time.

If it does it again contact SONY tech support to see if it's a known issue with this model. If they can't help you? Might have to ask how much would this cost to get fixed or just buy another brand instead.

How long have you had this model? 3 to 4 years you got good use out of it then. Less than that then there is a problem.
