  1. maybe its too old, companies have new products to sell, they kick old ones off the market

  2. Q: Why don't they sell 2006 Hondas anymore?

A: They replaced them with newer models.

Q: Why don't they sell the Sony a100 (which was introduced in 2006) anymore?

A: They replaced them with newer models.

Q: Why do people buy certified used Hondas?

A: Because they come with a warranty from the dealer.

Q: Why do people buy factory refurbished cameras?

A: Because they come with a warranty from the dealer.

Q: Why is the Canon XTi better than the Sony a100?

A: It just is.  The MP are virtually identical and the sensors are darn close in size.  There are issues about whether same-sized CMOS sensors  or CCD sensors give better image quality.  There are issues about the way a camera operates and some are more convenient or more intuitive than others.

Q: Why are the Nikon D80 and Sony a100 "different," even though they share the same sensor?

A: It's up to each manufacturer to decide what to do with the information that the camera gathers on the sensor in order to create the final image.  Nikon seems to have done a better job with the same sensor, if it really IS the same sensor.

Q: Is the Sony a100 worth buying on the used market?

A: It might be a nice way to enter the digital SLR world, but I can think of others that I would rather buy for the same money.  If you buy a Nikon or Canon, you will have many more lenses to choose from.  Think about a Nikon D50 or D70s or think about a Canon Rebel XT or XTi.  Any of these are available as refurbs from reputable dealers on eBay and in the real world.

  3. Save your money and buy new technology - the Sony A300 or A350. Both have Live View that works with the auto focus. So if you're in a situation where you have to hold the camera overhead to get the picture just flip the screen down, compose, check focus and shoot. If you're shooting at ground level, just flip the screen up.

Since Sony lists 26 branded lenses and has released a Carl Zeiss T* line of lenses and every legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 mounts to the Sont DSLR cameras If I were you I wouldn't worry about lens selection.

Also, remember that Sony has their version of image stabilization - Super Steady Shot - in the camera body. So a 20 year old Minolta Maxxum lens will have that benefit. The other guys offer a few lenses with image stabilization - and you pay extra for it.
