Sony Dwi Kuncoro escapes qualifying round scare at the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2012
Indonesia’s in-form shuttler Sony Dwi Kuncoro narrowly escapes an uncharacteristic defeat as he had to dig into his arsenal to chuck out India’s Anand Pawar in a sensational battle at the Men’s Singles qualifying round of Indonesia Open Premier Super Series

Sony, who has been placed at number 65 in the Men’s Singles world rankings, employed all of skills to overpower his talented Indian opponent in a superb showdown that took three games of tremendous badminton from both sides.
The in-form Sony, who has recently won the Men’s Singles title at Thailand Open GP Gold, failed to prove his worth in the opening set but powered his way back and grabbed the following game to register victory over Pawar in 51 minutes.
On the other hand, the spirited Indian showed his class in first set and won it with a tight margin.
However, Pawar failed to tackle the power play of his Indonesian opponent in the following game and lost the battle in three games.
In the first set, it was the Pawar who proved his supremacy in the court by playing aggressive badminton and took a sensational 11-6 lead on the board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Sony geared up his speed at net and also played flawless badminton from rear-court area. He progressed with an impressive pace and levelled the score at 14-14.
At this stage, both men played safe and composed badminton and reached at 21-21 when Sony executed a few wrong shots and lost the set with a 21-23 margin on the board.
However, it was a different story in the second game when Sony displayed his aggressive skills in the court and remained in commanding position in the opening half.
He was fully focused in the concluding half of second game and did not face any interruption from his Indian rival in winning the set with a one-sided 21-10 score on the board.
In the decider, the Indonesian continued putting up thrilling show and entertained his home fans with his positive and flawless play. He easily bagged the final set with a stunning margin of 21-9.
Sony won this three-set contest against Pawar in 51 minutes by a difference of 21-23, 21-10 and 21-9.
