Sony Dwi Kuncoro hammers Lin Dan to creates biggest upset of Thailand Open GP Gold 2012
Indonesia’s in-form male shuttler Sony Dwi Kuncoro delivered a staggering performance and created the biggest upset by defeating the ruling Olympic and World Champion Lin Dan of China in semi-final encounter at Thailand Open GP Gold 2012 at Bangkok, Thailand,
on Saturday, June 9.
The World Number 65 Kuncoro, who is un-seeded in the tournament, put up fabulous show of top class badminton and remained successful in beating the World Number 2 Lin who was the top seed in Men’s Singles draw of Thailand Open.
The lower ranked Indonesian, who has been struggling hard to get rid of injuries for the last couple of years, showed that he is back on track and is ready to beat whoever he finds on the opposite side of net.
On the other hand, Lin was shocked with the severe treatment that he received from his lower ranked Indonesian opponent. He could not dominate the pace at the crucial stages in the match and lost to Kuncoro without showing a strong character.
In the opening game, Lin started to play composed badminton while remaining focused and also managed a small lead at the early stage.
However, Kuncoro also was focused as he did not let Lin do build a comfortable lead and remained successful in matching the pace of rallies. Until the interval, the Indonesian was just behind his Chinese rival at 9-11.
After the break, Kuncoro played with impressive aggression and also followed his powerful smashes to earn points by killing the bird at net. He remained in commanding position in the ending points of first set and bagged it with a margin of 21-17.
In the following game, Lin treated the Indonesian with extreme fury as he played attacking badminton and took a quick lead of 6-1.
However, Kuncoro did not lose his focus at any stage and levelled the score by controlling the pace of rallies. Until the mid-game interval, the Indonesian was again trailing slightly behind at 8-11.
After the break, Kuncoro geared up his speed and ended the gap on the score board by reaching at 11-11. He was in full command of the pace and pushed Lin in all corners of the court and eventually snatched the game with a superb 21-16 margin on the board.
Sony registered a sensational victory over the current World Champion in just 38 minutes with a stunning difference of 21-17 and 21-16.
