Sony Dwi Kuncoro stuns Peter Hoeg Gade in Men’s Singles first round at Indonesia Open
Indonesia’s veteran Sony Dwi Kuncoro delivered a phenomenal performance and created an upset in Men’s Singles first round when he stunned his higher ranked challenger Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark at the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2012 in Jakarta,
on Wednesday, June 13.
The World Number 65 Kuncoro strongly came back after suffering with a series of injuries for the last more than two years. He won the Thailand Open last week and also found a perfect start in the Indonesia Open by beating the World Number 5 Peter Gade in
the opening round contest.
In the first game of the match, the Indonesian was pretty much in control of the pace as he played with precision and remained dominant in the rallies at the initial stage.
However, the third seed Peter Gade elevated his play and ended the domination of his rival by taking a reasonable lead of 11-9 until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Kuncoro tried his best to take control of rallies but failed to dictate his higher ranked rival and eventually lost the first game with a huge difference of 14-21.
Nevertheless, the situation was quite different in the following set when Kuncoro showed his class by becoming aggressive in the court and took a stunning 11-1 lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, the spirited Indonesian continued his staggering run in the court and easily clinched the second set with a one-sided 21-7 score on the board.
In the final game, Peter Gade played well in the first half and remained ahead on the board until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Kuncoro geared up his speed and levelled the score at 11-11. He was fully focused and composed in the court and remained equal to his Danish rival until the score reached at 18-18.
At this decisive stage, the Indonesian injected more power into his shots and became quick to take the bird quite early from all areas.
The impressive speed of Kuncoro created a big difference as it gave him an extra edge over Peter Gade and he managed to bag the set with a 21-18 score on the board.
Kuncoro overpowered Peter Gade in three games by taking 55 minutes with a score of 14-21, 21-7 and 21-18.
