Sony Handicam DCR-HC42E - The pull-out side screen has ceased operating, for absolutely no reason.?

It happened whilst filming a wedding. Fortunately I am still able to use the eye piece, but really need to use the screen. Can anyone help with this? Is it possible to do a "home" repair? The agents want to charge me the equivalent of half the price of a new camcorder! Please help?

Obviously there *is* a reason for it not working, but without knowing what it is it's impossible to tell you how to repair it.   I'm a notorious tinkerer, but I wouldn't attempt to fix it.
