  1. You did not provide enough information.

    What KIND of Sony Handycam?

If the camcorder uses miniDV or Digital8 tape, it uses the DV port (this is a 4-pin) and connects to the firewire port (not USB) of your Mac. The port installed on the computer is 6-pin. You need firewire400 (also known as i.Link or IEEE1394a) cable - it was NOT included in the box. USB will only be used for transferring stills. When you connect using firewire, the camcorder should also be plugged into the wall for power. The camcorder needs to be in Play/Edit mode. Launch iMovie. Name the new project. The blue preview window will appear and it will say, "Camera Connected". Click "Rewind". Click "Import". SAVE.

If the camcorder is hard drive or flash memory based, it should mount using USB and appear as a USB mass storage device. Copy the videos - you will also need StreamClip from Apple:

If the camcorder is DVD based, you will need to have a drawer loading DVD drive on your Mac and you will rip the DVD with something like HandBrake. NEVER put a miniDVD in a slot loading optical drive - you will scratch the disc and break the drive.

If the camera is for taking stills and happens to take highly compressed videos, take the memory card out of the camera and use a card reader to transfer the videos to the computer.
