My sony handycam DCR SR42 records in MPEG4 format. So this does not work with iMovie on my Mac.

I was thinking if i bought a fire wire, and used iMovie to transfer the clips,it would work.

Would it work?If not is there any other way?

If not are there any free editing programs (for mac or pc) that work with MPEG4 format?

  1. No... Your DCR-SR42 records in MPEG2 format - not MPEG4.

The SR42 is a hard drive based camcorder - there is no DV port for you to connect a firewire cable to a firewire port on your Mac.

You will use USB to copy the files - but you need to download and install StreamClip from Apple:

  2. It might if your Mac has iMovie 08. Otherwise you might need MPEG Streamclip or some other converting software to convert the files to something that iMovie recognizes like dv.
