Sony Kuncoro enthrals Kwong Beng in Men’s Singles qualifying round – Singapore Open Update
Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro alarmed all the contestants of Li Ning Singapore Open by opening his marathon against Kwong Beng Chan in perfect manner on June 19, 2012.
This 34-minute encounter got concluded in just two games with 21-9 and 21-16 and Kuncoro setup next clash with Yuhan Tan of Belgium.
World Number 45 shuttler, who is in top form after winning 2012 Thailand Open, proved his point by sealing this straight-set victory.
On the other hand, the Malaysian campaigner was no comparison to Kuncoro as he hardly created any problem for highly spirited Indonesian player.
The first set of match started with Kwong Beng moving forward discreetly. He gathered first two points and when the opposing shuttler caught him at 2-2 he jumped at five by dominating three continuous rallies.
However, Kuncoro did not let him go far and counterbalanced the situation by clinching three vital points in a row.
He did not lose this rhythm and reached at 8-5 without any major interruption. He maintained this decent lead until half time and placed a respectable total of 11-7 before interval.
After the mid-game break, he controlled overall pace of the game and pushed his challenger in all areas of the court.
The talented Indonesian prevailed in nine successive rallies and piled up a mountainous figure of 20-8. This burden proved too heavy for Kwong Beng and he knelt down after reading 9-21 margin on the board.
Next game was played with more passion and aggression as both contenders strived hard to achieve their respective goals.
In first half of the set, Kuncoro was bit sluggish in start but he geared up himself and gained two-point advantage initially.
The Malaysian shuttler equalled the score at 7-7 before putting a dominating total of 9-7. However, Kwong Beng lost the grip and allowed his competitor to finish first half with 11-10.
Later part of the game saw Dwi Kuncoro at his best as he swiftly registered 16-12 margin in third quarter and then wrapped the show with a notable difference in 21-16.
Now he is just one knock away from main round entry and his next encounter with relatively weak contestant has elevated his chances for main draw of the event.
