Sony Kuncoro outshines Vladimir Ivanov in opening round of 2013 All England Open
Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro had a perfect start of Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships as he thrashed Vladimir Ivanov in the opening round on Wednesday, March 6, 2013.
This Men’s Singles encounter proved a real test of mental and physical strength for both contenders as they had to sweat hard for 57 minutes in local badminton arena of Birmingham.
Though, the Russian campaigner established a strong grip by winning the opening game with 22-20 score but then Sony locked the honour by prevailing in the ending two games with 21-17 and 21-11 margin.
Now the fourth seeded player of this tournament will lock horns with Jan O Jorgensen in pre quarter-final round.
The Indonesian player took some time to read his rival’s strategy and this hit him hard in the opening set.
On the other hand, Vladimir kept his higher ranked opponent confused with a series of well crafted strokes. At first, he mounted pressure by clinching several consecutive points in first half.
After the mid-game break, Sony ruled the court in couple of consecutive rallies but then Vladimir reinstated his dominance and wrapped this segment of the showdown with 22-20 total.
However, story was entirely different in the following game as the Indonesian shuttler did not give his challenger even a single chance to extend his lead.
This time, Sony played impeccable badminton straight away from the beginning and maintained his supremacy all the way to final moments.
He showed his intentions by launching an intensive attack and then capitalised this psychological edge to pile up a mountainous figure of 11.
Latter part of the game saw Vladimir making a swift progress on the points table but then Sony put his expedition to halt with a decisive margin of 21-17.
The decider became crucial for both contenders and spectators were expecting lot of fireworks in the final set.
However, it proved a one-sided affair as the Men’s Singles expert of Indonesia served the notice of his supremacy in a style.
He maintained a significant difference on the points table and sealed his splendid win with an overwhelming score of 21-11.
