Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 1 – Intro and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
The Microsoft press conference left those who attended feeling sick of the word Kinect, Electronic Arts had a short but satisfyingly sweet press conference and Ubisoft threw up a few surprises with their own press conference leaving Sony with plenty to live
up to.
The Sony press conference began in Los Angeles at 5pm Pacific Time with a montage of all PlayStation had to offer, which served as a preview for things to come. Viewers could catch glimpses of familiar titles, PlayStation exclusives, multiplatform games
as well as a few shots of games no one had seen before.
When the montage ended, Jack Tretton, the President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, took to the stage and apologised to everyone for the PlayStation Network outage.
Jack however, did not let the mood get too sombre as he charismatically managed to make a joke on how the press, which feeds on controversy, had so much to write on courtesy of the PSN outage by saying, ‘You’re Welcome.’
Switching back to the formal tone however, Tretton went on to thank all the PlayStation users for their support as well as the backing from retailers, before announcing that the previous year had been the best year for the PlayStation 3 since its release.
Sticking to the business, Tretton explained how ‘consumers were the life blood of the company’ and he apologized both personally and on behalf of Sony for any anxiety that had been caused. He also explained how PSN usage was 90% higher after the re-launch
of the PSN as compared to the week before the outage.
Tretton then went on to explain that almost every title that was to be shown during the press conference would be playable at the Sony booth after the press conference concluded.
For those who were watching the press conference to find out more about their favourite games, or in fact the Next Generation Portable, had to wait, as the CEO of SCEA went on to outline the various services the PlayStation Network provided at the moment.
The PlayStation 3 was apparently responsible for 33% of Netflix’s video streaming load, making it a the largest single platform for the online movie service. Tretton also announced Cinema Now would be the latest online movie streaming service to be added
to the PlayStation Network.
With all the formalities of apologies, media partnerships and statistics out of the way, the press conference moved on to the bit everyone was looking forward to: games!
Tretton introduced Naughty Dog Co-president Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra on to the stage which only meant one thing, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Sony were starting their conference with their strongest title, something Microsoft should take notes
of.
The pair mentioned how they were ‘raising the bar again’ with Uncharted 3 and then proceeded to blow everyone away with a single player demo.
While the previous trailer had the game’s protagonist inside a burning Chateau, the latest live action demo had Nathan Drake on board a cruise ship which pitched back and forth and swayed from side to side with the water.
