Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 10 – Saints Row, Star Trek and EA Games
Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, was spoiling all those watching Sony’s E3 press conference, with a host of announcements relating to exclusive titles, previews and product line ups. With the announcement that BioShock
Infinite would be supporting PlayStation Move controllers, the press conference had gone from strength to strength.
However, Tretton believed it was time for a change of pace as he introduced another shrewd marketing move by Sony. People who would purchase a copy of BioShock Infinite would also get themselves the original BioShock game on the same Blu-Ray disk for free!
Sony seemed to be on their game and that was not the end of the announcements, as Tretton explained that Saints Row: The Third would have a mission available only to PlayStation users. With Microsoft looking on in envy, the game was scheduled for a release
date on November 15.
Tretton went on to announce another game that had sci-fi fans around the world collectively gasping their breath and giving each other strange hand signals to show their nerdy counterparts just how great they felt.
The trailer was of the new Star Trek game, shot in pre-alpha in-game footage and showed Kirk and Spock taking cover, blasting enemies away and generally causing mayhem from a third person view. It seemed Star Trek was finally making its way on to the world
of next generation gaming.
Fans of the series would also get a special PlayStation Move controller accessory shaped as a phaser. It was at that point, that one can safely assume that a large percentage of Star Trek fans fainted when the news reached their ears. This meant that they
probably missed the announcement that the game would be released next year in 2012.
Tretton was back and quickly moved on to highlighting Sony’s partnership with one of the largest game Developers/Publisher in the world, Electronic Arts. He announced that EA and Sony had teamed up to provide three more PlayStation 3 exclusives.
The first exclusive would be found in the long running snowboarding franchise, SSX. Japan’s Mount Fuji had been recreated using NASA satellite data and had 10 unique drop points. The stage would be available solely on the PlayStation 3 and received a fairly
enthusiastic reception.
The next exclusive, or rather exclusive, got a louder reception as it too related to another long running franchise. Need for Speed: The Run seemed to borrow certain aspects from Heavy Rain, yet it did look impressive and Sony was offering not one, not two,
not three but seven additional supercars just for PlayStation users.
