Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 15 – Ruin, ModNation Racers
Game announcements and live demos for the PlayStation Vita got off to the best possible start with Sony Bend Studio’s Uncharted: Golden Abyss live demo. How Sony were going to try and top that was anybody’s guess at this point.
So when Travis Williams, from Idle Minds, made his way on to the stage, it was safe to say that the level of expectation was quite high. Getting straight to the point, Travis announced a social action role playing game, Ruin. The title would be directly
compatible with the PlayStation 3 in a never before seen way.
But before the developer got to details on that, he walked everyone through the features and combat of the game. Ruin uses an over the top, almost arcade view and can safely be called a slash ‘em up, as Travis combo-ed his way through a horde of enemies.
All the while, giving away bits of information to the audience between sword slashes.
The game seemed to enhance the online multiplayer mechanic, first seen in Demon Soul’s where players could enter other player’s campaigns whenever they felt like, or to be more technical, the game used ‘Competitive connection’.
Other players could enter the game and choose to either help, hinder or harm the player on his quest and all the statistics and events would be posted on Twitter and Facebook for bragging rights.
Travis then showed one of the rival’s dungeons and explained that each player would have his own dungeon and that destroying the dungeon held the key to defeating the invading player. A nice concept, but one players will have to try out before deciding for
themselves.
Where things got really interesting however, was when the connectivity feature between the Ruin on PSVita and the PlayStation 3 was demonstrated. On previous occasions the ‘connectivity’ was more of a hollow gimmick, yet this time it was something much,
much more and could very well change the face of how people view portable gaming.
Players could basically play the exact same game, from exactly where they left off on the PSVita, on the PlayStation 3 and pick up where they left off. Sony seemed to be serious about cross platform gaming and with Dust 514 and now Ruin, it really was blurring
the line between different gaming devices and consoles.
The tagline was ‘from portable to living room’ and it sounds very exciting, not just for Ruin itself, but for gaming in general.
There was more lined up for the PlayStation Vita with ModNation Racers also getting a live stage demo. More details on how players can make tracks in under five minutes on the PS Vita is in the next part of the article:
