Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 16 – ModNation Racers, Little Big Planet
Cross Platform gaming seemed to be the theme of the PlayStation Vita presentation with both Ruin laying the foundation and the next title, ModNation Racers, taking it a step further.
The second PlayStation exclusive title to follow the ‘Play, Create, Share’ motto, ModNation Racers grew to have a huge online community. Thus, making the leap on to the PlayStation Vita seemed almost inevitable.
Erich Wass, from Sony’s San Diego Studios, made his way onto the stage and officially announced the PSVita version of ModNation Racers. The first, and perhaps the most impressive feature he demonstrated was the ‘draw mode’, where players could literally
draw their own tracks using their finger.
The path of the track was made live in front of everyone, in 5 seconds! He went on to add finishing touches like a jump, making the whole process look so easy that a three-year-old would not have a problem creating one himself.
The rear touch panel also had a use, as applying pressure to it raised the level of the ground, creating mountains and lakes, exactly where the fingers were. The multi-touch capability meant that anyone who wanted to create multiple mountains at the same
time could do so.
Players could also change environmental factors, like adding trees and houses with by simply touching the part of the screen where they wanted them. However, there was a noticeable delay between the touch and the appearance of the tree, which one can only
hope, will be sorted out by the time of the games release.
Once all of that was done, Wass changed the lighting source by simply manipulating the position of the sun with his finger and when he was done with that, he simply entered the track and started driving his cart around. It is important to note that this
entire process took barely over a couple of minutes and looked very simple.
Apparently the crowd thought the same and the applause was enthusiastic at the very least. Wass announced that there would be plenty of new features, which would be announced in months to come before dropping another, now trademark Sony E3, bombshell.
Owners of ModNation Racers on the PSVita would have access to the ModNation PlayStation 3 community from Day 1. In layman’s terms, everything PlayStation 3 users have created and shared on the console would be available on the PS Vita version as well. If
that does not impress the reader then its probably because he’s already unconscious and did not hear the news.
There was plenty more on cross platform functionality, including the announcement of a Little Big Planet game in the works for the PSVita. Details can be found in the next part of the article:
