Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 18 –Street fighter X Tekken, PlayStation Vita pricing
Having pleasantly surprised everyone with the announcement of Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom’s Mr. Yoshinori treated everyone to a live demo of the game, running in real time, on the PlayStation Vita.
Cole, the electrically charged protagonist from the Infamous series, faced off against one of gaming’s longest serving icons, Ryu. Yoshinori also demonstrated how players could use the touch panel to fight, a recurring theme in the press conference, but
one that did not reach the point of being monotonous.
In the end, Mr. Yoshinori ended up getting schooled by the AI opponent and, in an almost challenging tone, invited everyone to come backstage and try it out for themselves at either the Sony or the Capcom booth.
A montage ran on the screen that showed exactly what the PlayStation Vita had to offer, ranging from Uncharted: Golden Abyss to WipeOut, Little Deviants to Little Big Planets, and Soundshapes to pool among a host of other titles.
When the trailer ended, Kazuo Hirai, senior vice president of Sony, made his way onto the stage to announce both when the PS Vita would be available, but more importantly, how much it would cost.
According to the executive, everything would be available around the holiday season, including both models; the Wi-FI only and the Wi-Fi plus 3G models.
Sony seemed to have a thing for bombshells this time around in E3 as they had everyone cheering and applauding almost deliriously when they announced the price. At $249.99, the PlayStation Vita looked great value for money for the Wi-Fi only model.
The 3G and Wi-Fi enabled models on the other hand would cost just $50 more, at $299.99. The figures would remain the same and the currency would change for Europe as the models would sell for 249.99 and 299.99 Euros respectively.
Hirai left the stage after inviting everyone backstage to try out what Sony had to offer as Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, made his way back on stage.
He explained the depth of content in the PlayStation universe was stronger and more diverse than it had ever been. With products and technologies like 3D, the PlayStation Move controller, Sharp Shooter and Exclusive PlayStation titles all connected via the
PlayStation Network, Sony was strong enough as it is. Yet, he claimed that the PlayStation Vita would make it even stronger.
Brave words but with the stellar presentation that Sony gave, one cannot help but believe every word of it. As the press conference ended, a DJ ‘started the party’ as the screens lifted to reveal Sony’s backstage demo booths that had Twisted Metal, Resistance
3 and a host of other games on display.
