Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 6 – Medieval demo; Infamous 2
Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, continued with the Sony press conference after thanking Kobe Bryant for taking time out to demo 2K Games’ latest title, NBA 2K12.
The press conference had gone from strength to strength and only got better when Tretton announced that PlayStation users would be getting access to a new exclusive title.
Developed by the team behind Sports Champions, the latest game would use the same basic gameplay dynamics from the game with a few tweaks and enhancements. Umaro Mayer and Jeremy Ray made their way on to the stage and revealed exactly what Tretton was talking
about.
The two developers showcased their PlayStation Move controlled title Medieval Moves, in full 3D to the crowd. The demo showed the in-game character using a sword, bow and arrow and throwing stars against a host of enemies and objects.
What was impressive was how the player was able to switch seamlessly from one weapon to the other, based on how the player moved the controller. Anyone who has played Sports Champions would feel right at home in Medieval Moves as the archery and sword fighting
mechanics are almost identical.
The Move controller was also shown to be able to solve puzzles with the demo showing that doors could be unlocked by rotating the Move. Each stage within the game was also shown to have hidden paths as well as offering the player multiple paths to complete
each level.
Different enemy types were also shown ranging from the simple goblin/skeleton like creatures to ‘brutes’, which were harder to take down and carried shields as well. While the game did not look like a hardcore AAA title, it did look like a fair bit of fun.
The live demo ended with the announcement that the game was set for release date later on this year.
When Tretton appeared back on stage to continue with the press conference, everyone was expecting some news or announcement relating to the Next Generation Portable, instead they were slightly let down.
Tretton explained that Sony understood that gamers wanted choice, and were doing their best to provide them with a wide range of titles. In what can only be explained as a marketing move to get a few more copies off the shelves, Tretton showed a trailer
of Infamous 2.
The trailer in itself was fairly impressive, with a smooth soundtrack, plenty of action and explosions and a mean voice over, it was enough to get an enthusiastic cheer from the crowd.
It became clearer why Tretton had shown the trailer, when he explained that Infamous 2 would now support the Move. The controller could be used to create missions which could be shared online with other gamers.
