Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 7 – Starhawk, Dust 514
Sony were doing well with a solid press conference so far and Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, had more to share with all those who had made it to E3 in Los Angeles and the many viewers watching from home.
Tretton had been building up a theme of ‘only on PlayStation’ and hit the nail on the head with his announcement of two new PlayStation exclusive titles. First up was the sequel to the PlayStation 3’s first online multiplayer game, Starhawk.
Developed by Lightbox Interactive, the same team behind the cult classic Warhawk, Starhawk is set to be the PlayStation 3’s premier run-and-gun third person shooter. The news was followed by a trailer of the game, which started off with a desert setting
and an infantry trooper with a pair of very cool looking electric blue eyes.
The trailer then went on to show a fire fight that took place in a constantly changing environment, before showing the vehicles that would feature in the game. A jeep and a bike are shown before an aircraft transform into a mech, reminiscent of the Titan
from Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun.
It ended with an immersive looking outer space battle that showed exactly what the title of the game meant when it said Starhawk.
There was another surprise in store when Jack Tretton explained that he had been asked on countless occasions when one of PlayStation’s favourite franchises was set to make a return on next-gen consoles. Without giving anything else away, a teaser trailer
for Sly Cooper began on the huge screen in the background.
The game is set for a 2012 release and was well received by the crowd, yet Sony still had a few surprises up its sleeve in what was turning out to be a very impressive Sony E3 press conference.
Tretton acknowledged the support that they had been receiving from Publishers since PlayStation consoles started and explained how they were a major reason PlayStation was what it was today.
So when the CEO of Eve Online, Hilmar Petursson made his way on to the stage it could only mean one thing, a massively multiplayer online game (MMO). What everyone got instead was a pleasant surprise.
Starting off with a light joke about being from Iceland and how the country’s only contribution to the world was volcanic dust that caused all sort of air traffic problems, Petursson announced a PlayStation exclusive title by the name of Dust 514.
Petursson explained that the game would be focused on ground combat and planetary conquest, similar to Zipper Interactive’s MAG, but with a different setting. It seemed to be just another shooter before the announcement that followed.
