Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 8 – Dust 514, BioShock Infinite and the PS Move
Jack Tretton, CEO and President of Sony Computer Entertainment America had done a superb job of pacing Sony’s E3 press conference so far, but it seemed to have lost some steam when Hilmar Petursson, CEO of the developers behind Eve online, made his way on to the stage.
Announcing a PlayStation 3 exclusive online multiplayer title by the name of Dust 514, many thought it was just another first person shooter in an already saturated market. It turned out however, to be anything but that.
The one thing that set it apart from being just another first person shooter was the fact that it was a cross platform game. For those who do not understand the significance of what that means, one could compare it to football’s UEFA Champions League. Where teams and players from different leagues get to play each other, which in this case would be players who have Dust 514 on the PlayStation 3 taking on players who have Eve Online on their Personal Computers.
If you are still not impressed, then either you are a jealous Xbox 360 fan or Call of Duty fanboy.
Hilmar took it one step further when, after explaining that Eve Online and Dust 514 would share the same online universe; Dust 514 would also have PlayStation Move support and could be accessed either on the PlayStation 3 or the Next Generation Portable.
To call this piece of news a bombshell would be an understatement. The first cross platform game bringing together the PC and the PlayStation 3 brought with it so much promise, not just for Dust 514 but for the future of gaming as a whole.
Amazingly, Hilmar also brought with him a gameplay trailer of the game to show what gamers could expect in the futuristic shooter.
A drop-ship was shown carrying soldiers before it dropped them off on one end of a bridge where enemy snipers were making a nuisance of themselves. The game seemed to remind everyone of Zipper Interactive’s MAG, with the same level of graphics.
The voiceover at the end of the game showed that players would take on the role of mercenaries and that everything would have a cost. From drop-pods to drop-ships, soldiers to command centres, everything would come at a price.
No more details were given about the game-play but the trailer received a more than enthusiastic round of applause as the crowd bordered on going berserk.
A beta was announced to launch before the end of the year followed by a full release during spring of 2012.
With the news still causing a buzz in the crowd, a trailer for another iconic franchise began in the background, when it was Bioshock Infinite’s turn to steal the lime light.
