Sony Press Conference E3 2011 – Breakdown – Part 9 – BioShock Infinite and the PS Move, Saints Row
With the words ‘cross platform gaming’ and ‘Dust 514’ still ringing in the ears of everyone who was had been watching Sony’s stellar press conference, it seemed hard to follow up, unless of course one was to run a trailer of one of gaming’s most loved franchises.
Which is exactly what Sony did with BioShock Infinite. The first few seconds of the trailer already had more character building than the entire Microsoft press conference could muster up in one and half hours. The trailer showed various parts of the city
and cut to various scenes of the game, and even demonstrated some of the combat using in-game footage.
While fans of the series had seen most of what Sony had to offer prior, thanks to the wonderful invention we know as the internet, no one was prepared for what Ken Levine, from Irrational Games, had to say when he made his way on to the show room floor.
One of the few developers, who had been against motion control ‘tac-ons’, Levine spoke almost as if he was at a confessional. He explained how in an interview he had slated motion controlled gaming calling it a gimmick, before moving on to how a phone call
changed his point of view.
After the interview, Levine narrated that he received a call from Sony and was reluctant to take, though he knew he had to. After taking the call, the Sony representative on the other end explained that they wanted to make Levine a ‘believer’.
Levine went on to comically imitate how foolish one looked playing golf on the PlayStation Move and how Irrational Games did not do that kind of thing but rather focused instead on the core controller audience.
Sony apparently retorted by saying they wanted to remove the barrier of conventional controllers that limited players in terms of how they played videogames. After which, Sony played their trump card and explained that they did not want to change ‘controller’
players to ‘motion controller players’, but rather wanted to allow a larger audience to be able to pick up and play games.
With the confession session over, Levine revealed that for the first time, a BioShock game would feature motion control and that too exclusively with the PlayStation Move. One can only imagine the size of the grin on the Sony executive’s faces after the
announcement, as they one-upped their Microsoft counterparts.
Levine, however, had one last announcement to make. He pulled out a Sony Next Generation Portable and explained that Irrational Games was in the early days of developing a title for the handheld gaming device.
The developer made his way off the stage to the sounds of the crowd cheering as Sony had just dropped another gaming bombshell.
