  1. First, make sure you are importing an AVI, mpeg or other file that has both the video and audio. You can verify this by playing them with Windows Media Player. If it plays in Media Player but not in Vegas, you may be using a file that is not supported by the codecs installed in Vegas. One common problem is with the avi files that come from digital still cameras that record video. They are actually motion JPEG, or MJPEG, files and Vegas does not have the codec for MJPEG.

You will most likely have to convert the file to a type that is recognized by Vegas. See if it plays in Windows Movie Maker (Start, Programs, Windows Movie Maker). If it does, you can use WMM to convert the file for you. Just put the file in WMM, then select Make Movie - Save to my computer - Select the location for the conveted file - for Movie Setting, try "Other Settings" and try "Video for local playback (2.1 Mbps NTSC) and see how the resultant file plays and looks in Vegas. It will take a long time for the conversion to run.

Your other option would be to add a codec to Vegas that recognizes the file you have. To find out what you have, you will need a file analyzer such as gspot available free from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpo...  Once you know what you have, you then will have to search the www.free-codecs.com site for a codec. If it is a MJPEG file, there are no free codecs for that type of file. You'll have to buy one from Morgan Multimedia for $20 at http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/
