Question

which types of video files are supported by Sony Vegas 7?

because i usually use a digital camera which makes .avi/mvi files and they are not supported(i dont think) by sony vegas 7

i want to find out which types of files are compatible with sony vegas 7 so i can convert my avi files to those files to use them

Vegas supports AVI, MPEG-1/2, DV, HDV, and various other files. You can tell if the current file can be opened by Vegas simply by dropping a video file onto the Vegas timeline..  no guesswork needed.

".mvi" files are movie files created by AutoCAD... these can't directly be opened by most video editors, but they're not created by cameras or camcorders. Perhaps you have a Canon still camera, which uses "MVI_" in the file name for movies it records, but is actually making .AVI type files.

The trick with .AVI is that AVI itself is not a movie format, it's a container which can contain practically any kind of audio or video stream. You need a CODEC program to allow Vegas, Windows Media Player, or any other Windows program to understand what's contained in the AVI. Windows comes with some of these, but there are many others no included in Windows.

Assuming a Canon Powershot (it's always a good idea to specify exact make and model when asking for help), you probably have "Motion JPEG" files... that's just a series of JPEG photos stored as a series to create a movie file. There's no one standard for the details of MJPEG, but various versions have been in use for 20 years.

First move -- try it. You won't break anything. If Vegas doesn't understand your AVIs, it'll probably just load the audio track.

Next... see if you have an install disc that came with the camera. That is likely to have the AVI CODEC needed to play the video. If you can find this, install it.

An alternative is to install ffdshow-tryout, which is a smaller collection of video CODECs that supports at least some flavors of Motion JPEG.
