I'm planning on picking up this software pretty soon hopefully for a good price, but I've seen at least 2 different versions of it in different stores and on the internet. what are the differences?

  1. See for yourself. See the link below>>>>>>>>>

  2. There are three different versions of Sony Vegas: Movie Studio,  Movie Studio Platinum and Pro. The big difference between Movie Studio and Movie Studio Platinum is that Platinum will do HD. Pro does all that Platinum will do and adds a lot of professional broadcast and production house capabilities. This link will tell you all the differences between the Sony Vegas products: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vega...

However, you asked about the difference between the versions of Platinum, so I am assuming you mean the vesions, like 7 or 8. There is not much of a functional difference between 7 and 8, just some new features. Version 8 added:

    1. Freehand envelope drawing on the timeline

    2. Display of media marker names in events

    3. Improved snapping - color-coded visual snap indicator and the ability to snap to event

    4. Fullscreen preview to a secondary Windows display

    5. Multithreaded audio engine

    6. Gracenote® MusicID™ CD album recognition

    7. Improved native HDV .m2t playback performance and improved memory handling for HDV longform projects

    8. Sony AVCHD import and edit support

    9. Import and export support for ATRAC3™, ATRAC3plus™, and ATRAC Advanced Lossless™ files

    10. Insert I-frames at marker positions when rendering MPEG-2 (works in conjunction with I-frame viewer in DVD Architect Studio 4.5).

    11. ATRAC audio plug-in (Templates only)

You'll have to decide if these features are worth the price difference between versions.
