Question:

Sony Vegas?

I have downloaded the trial version of Sony Vegas. The program runs like a dream. The only thing is, it saves my movies as ridiculously large files. I made an AMV (a 4:30 video clip with video and audio) When I pressed "Make movie" its file size was 1.01 gigs. My friend who has Vegas 7, save a 5 min movie, to only 80 megabytes. I am fine with the large files, because I have plenty of room on my hard drive. But if they are over 1 gig, I can't upload them to youtube. I managed to render my 4:30 clip, saving it to nearly 1000 megabytes (still less than a gig)

So I ask, whats wrong? Why do they save ridiculously large like that? Is it the program, or maybe my crappy computer?

Oh, and how do I stretch the vids to fite the whole box in a youtube vido, mine all have little black bars at the top and bottem as well as the sides.

Thank you for your time.

  1. it's not the program, it's your options. i suggest you WMV files witch can be easily uploaded in to youtube. choose WMV as your file format and choose a NTSC template from the ready templates dropping list. if you choose a NTSC standard video size those black borders will be removed, if you clips are not NTSC you can't remove the black parts without cropping the video from the width.

  2. Vegas creates a lot of files - capture files, settings, projects. When you render, you have a TON of options.  Compression, key frames, codec, audio and more.  I did a 2 min 1080i video clip for a friend.  At top quality audio and video, it was huge. Lowering the audio quality saved about 20%.  For other types, it totally depends on the rendering format and size.  Typically I make 3 min clips and they average 15 meg, but the audio is not important - I often use mono.

Video takes HDD space. I have 800 gig just for video work. The average DVD uses 300 gig before I'm done (captures, renders, image files, etc.)

Vegas is not that easy to blunder through. Some items that should be a menu option are in the timeline. For example, cropping is easilly done on a timeline. In Vegas 8 (what I use) It's the "Track Motion" feature - it's not called crop.  It's on the left of the timeline. The icon is two overlapping rectangles.

However - if you setup your project correctly, you should not have to crop at all.
