Sony XM-D9001GTR Amp protector light on, why?

I have had my Sony amp running 2 12" MTX subs for almost a year now, but a few weeks ago I noticed the subs shutting off at no specific time, sometimes 2 minutes sometimes a half hour. It also seemed the louder I turned it up the quicker the protector came on and my subs shut off. It didnt get gradually worse, it just stopped coming on at all one day. Now the protector light is constantly on and the subs wont work. Also before when it was shutting itself off, if I turned the power off on my deck and turned it back on it would work again... although only for a few minutes. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  1. first of all.. your subwoofers are not shutting off... the amp is just going into protect mode which does not allow the amp to send a signal to the subs.

the problem seems to be your amp settings.

check the settings on the amp, never have any at Max, and never go higher than 3/4 on the gain/level. this will give a distorted signal to the amp.

also, check the wiring to determin the final ohm load of the subwoofers. once you know this, check your amps specs. if the final ohm load is not stable by the amp, this will be your problem too.

check the fuse on the power wire, might be a little loose.

  2. Your amp can not handle it.  Its either being over powered or your subs are wired to say 1 ohm and its not one ohm stable my friend had the same problem with his sony because he had all the amps settings all the way up.
