  1. Well, there are several things that you need to consider...

Do you own any SLR cameras? If yes, you may want to consider staying with that make you already have if you want to keep using the equipment.

What aspects do you like and dislike about each camera. Does one have more things you need? Features? Settings?

The equipment available & the prices. Will you need specific lenses? Are they worth purchasing?

How is the customer service for each company? And the warranties as well?

Which feels better in your hand? Which controls and menu systems do you like more?

Remember Sony only accepts its own memory cards, so no CFs or SDs, but thats not a huge deal. It also has in camera

stabilization, while Nikon has it in the lenses (this tends to make the lenses pricier.) BUT Nikon has a variety of used lenses, so you can choose anything from lenses from the 60s to now, which could save you money.

Basically, it's all on personal preference. I'm sure that both would be wonderful cameras, especially for an entry level dSLR user.

    Good luck!

  2. It depends on how far you want to go with your photography.

    Sony makes no professional DSLR's

Nikon (and Canon) make entry level, pro-bridge and professional DSLR's

In addition there are many more lenses available for Nikon cameras as well as a huge number of excellent used lenses ...
