  1. My vote is for the Sony A200.

  2. nikon d40

  3. just a simple verdict between the two:

    Sony a200

    Good points

    Built-in anti-shake - works with any lens.

    InfoLithium battery gives accurate feedback.

18-70mm kit lens longer than most rivals.

    Quicker AF than predecessor.

    Bad points

Relatively noisy at 800 ISO and above.

No Live View (but it's on the A300 version).

Anti-dust system not effective in our tests.

Flash doesn't popup as high as rivals.

    Nikon D40

    Good points

    Small, light and comfortable.

Very easy to use with helpful menus.

Consumer-friendly photos out of the camera.

Nikon's legendary metering is rarely fooled.

    Bad points

Has 'only' 6 Mpixels, but it's enough for most.

No auto-focus with certain, older lenses.

Some settings require too many button presses.

Basic 3-point AF and no DOF preview

  4. Do You Mean The Alpha A200k ?

    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Digital-Stead...

it's the one for the 499$

and the nikon d40 is about 470$, with a kit lens, so prices are a little different..

You should get the a200k, and here why:

    1) It has a larger Screen The d40 ( 2 centimeters )

    2) It has image stabilization, in body, vs in the lenses, so you can use IS with every lens you have.

    3) the a200 has four more megapixels ( 10.2 VS 6.2 )

Sony just put more into to the design of the a200k, it's a better camera than the d40, and is larger ( physically ), so it'll more comfortable, i'm not dissing the d40 though. I have it, but i would've gotten the a200, but it didnt' occur to me. You should get it from http://amazon.com they sell everything for cheaper than the middle man.
