  1. Based upon reviews of each camera. I think the D40 would be an appropriate choice for your needs. Though both have their pros and cons, it seems that the D40 has more good points than the A200 has to offer, especially for your needs. Here are reviews for each camera from dpreview.com. This is a highly reputable, and well regarded digital camera review site. This is where you will get the most reliable reviews from, IMHO. For both cameras, I'm linking you to the 'conclusion' pages. You can choose other pages from a pull down menu for things like sample images and more, but these pages will sum things up for each camera very well for you:

  2. Pro:  Both cameras are DSLR's so have much larger sensors than any P&S camera.  Neither suffer form the shutter lag issues found on all P&S cameras.  Both have interchangeable lenses.

Pro Nikon:  There are currently 29 AF-S (Silent Wave Motor that enables ultra-high speed autofocusing) available and many more used AF-I and AF-S lenses available.  As you later upgrade to more advanced Nikon cameras, lenses from 1959 (except for some early fisheyes) can be used.

Con Sony:  They are new comers to the still photography arena, so even though some Minolta lenses will work, you will have to check on a lens by lens basis to make sure if older lenses will work on the A200.

  3. Nikon d40 without a doubt ,Nikon is an excellent camera over sony

  4. Nikon, they specialize in cameras.

  5. nikon definitly lenses that can be bought and that the fact that they make their own lenses. IE covered under warranty

  6. Nikon has a really good selection of lenses, but most of their best won't autofocus on the D40. Also, many people like the D40 because of its good high ISO performance, but that's because it has only a 6MP image sensor. (In fact, the Nikon D40 is the last dSLR on the market that still only has a 6MP image sensor.) If you don't need to shoot at higher ISO settings, you would be better off with the higher resolution.

The A200 has a better autofocus system, higher resolution, as good a selection of lenses, plus sensor shift image stabilization, and is comparably priced.
