Jenova Chen, the co-founder of Thatgamecompany, claims that Sony has a more “adult-focused taste” and attracts gamers more open to “artistic games” than other consoles.
Some may argue that video games are nothing much than a waste of one’s time while others are of the opinion that the medium can and should be considered an art. Whichever side of the fence one is on, it is difficult to deny the fact that video games have become a mainstream form of entertainment for millions of people around the world.
In the video game world there are the home consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U), the portable gaming consoles (PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS), mobile gaming platforms (iOS and Android powered phones) and of course the PC.
Each console or platform has created a distinct brand image for itself and according to the visionary co-founder of Thatgamecompany, Jenova Chen, Sony’s PlayStation Network titles are catered for more adult gamers who are open to more artistic titles.
“Sony has a more artistic and adult-focused taste. They care about how grown-ups feel toward their games. The player who owns a PlayStation 3 is more likely to be interested in artistic games compared to Wii and Xbox.”
One could cite Thatgamecompany as the most artistic studio out there at the moment with their gorgeously enchanting takes on the video game genre with titles such as Flower and, more recently, Journey.
Both games received huge amounts of praise from everyone and anyone who played them and that makes the studio the authority on art in games.
Chen’s statements were backed up by Jack Buser, the Director of PlayStation Digital Platforms, when he said, "Our primary PSN audience is indeed more adult, and many of our best-selling titles appeal to this demographic."
He went on to explain how games on PlayStation required gamers to think and connect with the title and cited the examples of Flower, Heavy Rain and Journey as games that had gamers connect with the game in ways that other titles are unable to.
He concluded, “Titles like these can only be found on PlayStation, and our users enjoy the emotional and thematic sophistication of their games, especially with our digital offerings,"
