PlayStation 3 and future consoles to support 3D gaming “where appropriate” according to consumer electronics giant.
Sony was the first of the three platform developers, including both Nintendo and Microsoft, who jumped at the prospect of introducing 3D technology in their video game console, the PlayStation 3. Games such as Killzone 3, MotorStorm: Apocalypse, Crysis 2 and Gran Turismo 5 all have a 3D feature.
However, consumers have not embraced the concept of 3D gaming as wholly as Sony would have liked, with the feature being more of an add-on that very limited gamers are able to access. The reason for this is that 3D Television sets are relatively more expensive and not as many households have them as compared to the High Definition television sets.
Sony has attempted to address the issue by releasing the PlayStation 3D TV earlier last year. The TV was priced at $399 (now only costs between $249 to $299) and the 24-inch screen boast full HD and stereoscopic 3D.
Almost reiterating their belief in 3D technology, Jim Ryan, The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said, "I just think that it's something that's now moving into the mature phase." Before continuing, "You only have so much time at these things, and there was an attempt at yesterday's conference to make it shorter - which I thought was excellent.”
He continued, "3D was the new thing two years ago, it's not the new thing anymore - it's just part of the bedrock of content development and publishing."
However, Ryan also pointed out that the technology should not be forced down everyone’s throats and that the technology needed to be used wisely. He said that the tech would only be used, "Where appropriate, yes. Not where it doesn't make sense, but where appropriate - absolutely."
Sony will be hoping that future titles such as the Last of Us and God of War: Ascension will drive the 3D business as both games are set to be triple-A PlayStation 3 exclusives that everyone has an interest. However, analysts predict that the only way 3D gaming will become more mainstream is if the prices of 3D TVs go down.
