Sony ericsson S500i. my new phone keeps coming up with the message that the sim card is not

my new phone keeps coming up with the message that the sim card is not in...."insert sim card, or to view a demo of this phone first, press Demo."
We have taken the sim card out and put back in a few times. The phone does work otherwise.
