Sony might be forced into dropping PlayStation Vita prices
World renowned analyst, Hideki Yasuda has gone on to state that Sony might just be forced into dropping the prices on the PlayStation Vita.
Yasuda is basing most of his analysis on the fact that the Nintendo 3DS is going to be facing a price drop and in order to prevent its competition from running riot, Sony are going to have to find a way to get back in the frame.
The Ace Securities analyst, when talking about the situation Sony find themselves in, is quoted to have said, “Gamers are increasingly anticipating Sony to lower prices, especially after the 3DS cut. Sony is under major pressure to cut the price of the Vita
or risk a major failure.”
At the moment, Sony are maintaining their stance on the situation, which sees them stand firm on their prices and not get affected by the drop in the 3DS price.
Sony’s executive deputy president, when addressing the issue, went on to claim, “We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable. There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided
that they were going to lower their price.”
Making last minute price cuts isn’t new to Sony. The company has occasionally been affected by their competitors and this has caused them to drop their prices on a number of occasions. The most recent and distinct example of such an incident took place in
2006, prior to the launch of the PlayStation 3.
Despite claiming that the 20 gigabyte version of the PlayStation 3 would cost ¥60,000 ($515 at the time), the company went on to drop its price to ¥49,980 (around $429), prior to launch.
As a result, there seems to be a very strong possibility that the Vita’s price might actually be cut.
The PlayStation Vita is Sony’s latest handheld portable gaming device, which is the successor of the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The new version of the PSP has taken a huge step in the direction and a lot of hype surrounds its release, primarily because
the announcement by Sony of its impeccable graphics, which come close to Sony’s Playstation 3.
The Vita features a touchscreen input system, a touch pad on the back of the device, cameras mounted on the front and the back, GPS, WIFI, 3G, connection to the PlayStation Network and a much higher processing power. All in all, Sony are looking to make
the Vita a handheld social media device, which offers the best possible gaming capabilities, on the move.
The PlayStation Vita is currently set to be released in the Japanese market before the end of the year, while the North American and European markets would get their hands on the product in 2012.
