Sony planning a few surprises for PlayStation next year, loses Resistance 3 developer
Jim Ryan, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has both teased PlayStation fans with hints of surprises and also expressed his dismay at losing a developer which was once exclusively theirs.
Starting things off with the teasing and the surprising and it seems that Sony seem to know something no one else does when it comes to what they have in store for the gaming world in the next year. Though, knowing the company’s history at not being able
to keep secrets, it will not be too long before that too becomes common knowledge.
Mr. Ryan stated, “There’s a bunch of stuff at the back end of the year – I’ll tease you with this because I’m not going to tell you what because I can’t – which I’m very excited by, and you’ll hear about (them) over the coming months.” Before going on to
put a smile on every journalists face when he said, “(They’ll) give you plenty to write about.”
The first thought that springs to everyone’s mind is the next generation of gaming consoles, the PlayStation 4, which Sony is reportedly developing at the moment. There has been plenty of speculation yet so far, and impressively so, the consumer electronics
giant has remained tight lipped on the matter.
The second thought comes to the PlayStation Vita, which is set to be the second generation of handheld portable gaming devices from the company. Yet, there has been so much news about it already one has to wonder if Sony has something else up their sleeve
regarding the beast of a console.
Lastly, one has to consider whether or not there are any new PlayStation 3 exclusives in the works. Be it a new series or franchise, or another instalment in an existing exclusive series such as God of War 4 or maybe another Killzone game
The former has been discussed and rumoured on a number of forums but there has been no confirmation and the latter is pure unfounded speculation based on the premise of hope.
It seems that only time will tell what the reason behind Sony’s ‘I know something you don’t know’ smirk actually is.
However, it was not all teasing and hinting from Mr. Ryan as he explained that he would have preferred having Insomniac Games as a Sony exclusive.
The studio is behind some of PlayStation’s main franchises such as Ratchet & Clank and the more popular Resistance trilogy. He stated, “In an ideal world would we prefer them still to be working exclusively on our platforms? Yes probably.”
At the same time he was quick to mention the strength in depth that Sony had when he explained, "The strength of our internal studios at the moment means it isn’t the end of the world by any means.”
