The consumer electronics giant hails a strong start to the consoles release in America and hopes to build on the momentum with new titles in the coming weeks.
Sony has a lot riding on the PlayStation Vita being a success as it looks to recover from a woeful financial year in 2011. The consumer electronics giant bore losses in excess of $172-million following cyber attacks on its servers in April.
Nintendo has already announced its next generation console, the Wii U, leaving both Sony and Microsoft racing to ensure that they do not allow their rivals to capture too much of the market.
Sony do not need to rush as much as Microsoft do (though one can expect the consumer electronics giant not to take its ‘sweet old time’ either) as they already have a next generation console in the market, the PlayStation Vita.
However, the console has not been selling as well as many consumers hoped it would despite posting sales figures of 1.2-million units sold since its Japan only launch in near the end of December.
The console has released in other territories as well and Sony have stated that they are more than satisfied with the US launch of their second generation portable gaming console.
Patrick Seybold, the head of Corporate Communications for Sony Computer Entertainment America, stated, “After months of anticipations, the US launch of PlayStation Vita saw overwhelming enthusiasm amongst gamers, resulting in exceptional hardware, software
and peripheral sales.”
He continued, “Customer satisfaction rates are very high and momentum will continue as gamers get their hands on a deep line-up of blockbuster titles that take advantage of PS Vita’s unique features, including cross-platform play with the PlayStation 3.”
Analysts are also predicting that in order for the Vita to maintain and improve its sales figures, it needs more content; especially titles that can sell the console. Metal Gear Solid HD is one such title yet that has been pegged down to a release date sometime
around June and that too only in Japan.
So unless Sony want the Vita to drift away into the backdrop they need to get some serious heavy weights out into the market sooner rather than later.
