Sony to reveal the tech behind GPU that powers the PlayStation Vita at this year’s Develop Conference
For people who care about the specifications of a piece of technology, along with what the technology does practically, there is some exciting news. Sony is set to reveal the secrets behind its General Processing Unit, at this year’s Develop Conference in
Brighton.
While some companies prefer to keep their technology secret, Sony has a history of sharing what powers their systems and how it sets it apart from the rest. Sony made no secret of its IBM designed core which powered the PlayStation, making it a supercomputer
in its own right.
Instead Sony prefers to use its technology specifications to add to what the product is capable of delivering. Their Blu-Ray player and format discs, PlayStation Move Controller and Core were all publically flaunted, to great effect.
Microsoft only recently picked up on the idea showing off the capabilities of Kinect. However, Sony seems to want to stay ahead in that particular race as Kish Hirani, Developer Services and Neil Brown, will brief the audience on what powers the PS Vita.
What makes the prospect exciting is that the GPU powering Sony’s portable gaming device is said to be different, not only from the ones used in PCs, but also from any gaming console out on the market. While most of the gaming community will shrug at the
news and move on with their lives, there is a percentage of people out there looking forward to the briefing as much as gamers look forward to E3.
Apparently Brown would be sharing all the technical details relating to the PS Vita, including how the relatively small machine comes so close to matching current next-generation consoles in terms of graphics.
Also to be shared are the thoughts of how the developers, responsible for making games for the portable device, are taking to the revolutionary piece of technology.
The PlayStation Vita made its first foray into the public eye in January at the Tokyo Game Show, though at that point in time it was dubbed the Next Generation Portable, or NGP. It made its official debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), where
it received an enthusiastic response from the audience.
The pricing of the PS Vita however, received quite a loud cheer and at $249.99, it was easy to understand why.
With a host of games under development including WipeOut 514, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Ruin, Little Big Planet, ModNation Racers and Little Deviants it’s hard not to get excited for the PS Vita’s, as yet unannounced, release.
However, more news can be expected in both the Develop Conference and GamesCom, which is scheduled for August.
