The Vita has made a bit of a comeback in the hardware sales charts as it jumps above the PlayStation Portable but it is still miles away from the Nintendo 3DS.
Sony may not be admitting a fact and state that they are not concerned, but the sales figures for their second generation of portable gaming devices, the PlayStation Vita, shows that it has not been selling well.
The Vita was unable to take the top spot in the Japanese hardware sales charts, where the Nintendo 3DS has been reigning supreme since, well, since as long as one can remember. The Vita’s sales figures continued to drop week after week before they settled on around the 14,000-units sold per week mark.
However, things seem to be improving for Sony’s impressive piece of kit, as it sold a total of 17,141-units in the previous week. That being said it did sell more in the week before, but it does show a level of consistency in terms of sales.
The PlayStation Portable, which surprisingly sold better than the Vita over the past few weeks, saw its sales figures drop to 15,847-units sold in the previous week and settled in fourth place on the chart.
As for the top two spots, well, as mentioned earlier, the Nintendo 3DS continues to dominate as it sold a head and shoulders more than the rest. The 3DS sold a staggering 75,018-units in the past seven days to keep the top spot for yet another week.
In second place came the PlayStation 3, which kept itself in the race by selling 23,293-units.
As for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the American console has never been popular in Japan and last week saw no change in its popularity as it only managed to sell 1,382-units.
Sony will be hoping that the launch of the Vita in other regions will fare better than how it did in Japan, but have publically stated that the sales figures for the portable console were both expected and did not concern them too much.
The consumer electronics giant though has been taking steps to ensure a better turnout for its American release by offering gamers a free memory card and a free game in a limited edition bundle.
