  1. Free lunge him in an arena. Get his attention! Lunge him for about 8-10 minutes and then put the lunge whip down, and let your pony come in towards you. If he doesn't lunge him a second time until he comes in. Don't EVER walk to him. He has to come to you!

if you don't have a lunge whip use a lead rope. Swing it. Ask him to walk trot canter!

in time your pony will listen to you and have total respect.

  2. i have a 4 year old quarter horse mare that is doc olena bred so she is a spaz and always fights with me, i personally think she enjoys it.some things i do with her when she isnt listening is i lunge her one time the left at a canter and then reverse her really quick and just keep on doing that, this keeps them focused on you and paying attention, i would walk him around the arena and then random say whoa and stop, balk up, do a haunch turn and things like that, i would also try using ground poles, because  if he doesnt pay attention to how you tell him to collect or extend he will hit the poles and so h**l wanna do what you say. back him into his stall, and the biggest thing dont let him rub on you, i know its hard to do this, but its the best thing, keep him at arms length ALL THE TIME, if he starts to walk faster than you, swing the lead rope like an old plane propellor in front of both of you, itll hit him in the nose if he goes in front of you, so good luck, i dont know if theses will help, but this is what has worked for my horses

  3. Groom and bond etc. if he trys to nip you or do anything that shows dominace over you than tell him NO in a loud firm voice but never hit him like most people do, this just makes him head shy when you raise your hand to groom him. and be nice to him overall but not passive GOOD LUCK :)

  4. It's as simple as this: move his feet, front to back, left to right. That is exactly what horses do to eachother when they're fighting for domination. The lead horse pushes all the other horses around by MOVING THEIR FEET! Do ANYTHING that consists of YOU moving HIS feet and not vise-versa! Good luck.

  5. pony's can be a little uh bossy is a nice way to put it.my miniature will sometimes try to bite my leg if hes not getting his way. this guy is broke to death.pulls a sled and rides kids, but he thinks hes all that.when he trys to bite i act like i am going to kill him for 3 seconds.i never hit him,but i scream holler, shake his head,or pinch his nostril real hard.then he remembers i am the boss.

i didn't read the first question so i don't really know how badly your animal is behaving.some get bad habits and they are very difficult to stop.some bad behaviors are created threw miss handling of the animal,or a bad experience of some sort.

  6. To build respect, first, you need to make sure you are showing respect towards him... he will never respect you if you don't respect him and his boundaries and so on. You need to know him well enough when you're working with him to know when you're asking too much. Right now, you're probably frustrated with him to some degree, so you need to make sure you don't take your frustration out on him and be unclear in you aiding.

Basically, for him to truly respect you, you need to go back into the herd nature of the horse. In a horse herd, there is a lead mare, and a stallion, who are the "dominant" horses of the herd. The lead mare leads the horses (obviously), and the stallion drives the horses from the rear. You need to show your pony that you can be either the mare, or the stallion. I suggest you do some "liberty" work with your pony... so in a round corral, or arena, pasture, doesn't really matter. You must make sure though that is it safe with good footing. Basically, just take a rope or longe whip and move him around, make him go forward. You only have to make him trot around, maybe canter... you never have to chase him where he becomes worried in any way, just move him around. MAKE SURE not to take it too far. You want to prove your point to show him that you can push him forward, but you do not want to scare or fatigue him. Just push him enough until he becomes willing, and doesn't sass you. Hopefully, if you do that right, he will be so willing to stop trotting, and he will follow you, and that's when you praise him and tell him how happy and proud you are of him. He will begin to like this new relationship much better if you do it correctly. To him, you always want to seem confident, kind, and understanding. You always want him to think you are helping him. NEVER boss him around, even if he tries to boss you around. Horses naturally want a leader, so if you create yourself as a leader to the horse, he will follow. Just be kind, patient, and understanding with him.

    Good luck!!

  7. brushing and grooming are the best ways to earn the trust of a horse...and of coarse treats and feed!!

I had good luck with John Lyons book...called Lyons on horses. There are some good round pen reasoning exercises in there that helped me earn the respect from a 3yo stallion. Check it out.

  8. try going on long slow trail rides, the pony should enjoy that, try to do a join up in the round pen, if you dont know what this is just google it!

and when he does the right thing, reward him with lots a praize, but dont use to many food treats as this can make it worse in the long run!

    goodluck!

  9. you just have to be the dominant one..... so does that mean go out and beat the c**p out of your horse? absoultly not.... but you need to spend time with thim....groom him.... ride him.... and be his friend. If he bites you....give him a slap on the neck.....

put him on a lead rope and do some showmanship with him.... walk him...tell him to whoah and set him up..... trot off.... and so on.... Make him pay attention to you..... by doing showmanship he will learn to pay attention.

and do the same excercises while riding..... do not let him get away with stuff that he knows....
