  1. Honestly, you're making this out to be much worse than it actually has to be or even will be!  Yes, college is a lot different than high school, but believe me, that is a good thing.  College is much neater than high school, because you get to choose your classes, you choose your schedule, and you make friends with people from all walks of life and you may be friends with one person and one other person and those two may not like each other, but they don't care if you're still friends with the other person- that kind of immaturity no longer exists!

College also gives you flexibility.  Just because you chose Psychology as your major while you are/were an incoming freshman does not mean that you are stuck with it forever.  If you are not completely sure of your major, you can take the intro course in Psychology, take an art course and take two courses in general education core curriculum and then feel it all out and see what you like.  You may decide you love Psychology and keep that major, or you may decide that it really isn't for you, but at least you gave it go and you gained the knowledge and experience.  You are not required to settle on a major until you reach your junior year anyway, so no sweat there!

Just hold your head high, be proud of your accomplishment thus far, and start getting excited about this new stage in your life- you're growing up and now you have this wonderful opportunity to go out and learn all new things and see what's available to you.  That's an amazing adventure in and of itself!

  2. First off: relax about your major. You can always change it, and in fact I think most school don't require you to actually declare one for a while anyway. I entered planning to be a philosophy major and graduated with a BA in political science.

Most schools will require you to take care of certain gen ed requirements (ie you have to take at least a stab at being well rounded) and then finish off the requirements for at least one major. For your first two years try to get rid of the gen ed requirements (at least the ones you can't fill later through you major) and take entry level classes in a couple of subjects you might be interested in. Then go with whatever one you like best, or think will have the most value for you once you graduate.

Also when you first arrive don't knock yourself out. For your first quarter/sememester take easy/fun classes (and no more than a regular load) to ease yourself into college. You'll have plenty of time for harder stuff later. And in general college isn't actually all that hard (unless you make it hard on yourself).
