Men’s Doubles shuttler, Ong Soon Hock of Malaysia has decided to start his career as an independent shuttler as he announced that he will not be playing under Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The 27-year-old shuttler represented country with his partner Mak Hee Chun and both forged a good chemistry to reach at 66th spot in world rankings but Doubles Head coach Tan Kim Her broke their partnership and paired up Hee Chun with Teo Kok
Siang few weeks back.
Doubles expert Soon Hock will now join hands with Gan Teik Chai and the duo will try to register their mark in Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold.
After representing the country as national player for almost a decade, Soon Hock looked positive about his new venture as he vowed to touch new heights with his partner Teik Chai.
He said, “I have left BAM but I am not slowing down as a professional. I still want to make a name in badminton and I hope my partnership with Teik Chai will bear fruit.”
Earlier, another male duo Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari also quit as national players and started their career as independent players last year. The duo jumped up ten steps in the latest world ranking and now stands at the 62nd
spot.
Veteran shuttler Soon Hock registered his presence in the arena by winning Asian Junior title in 2002 and then he fetched bronze medal for country in World Junior Championships.
He bagged many crucial victories as national player but could not manage to win any major tournament throughout his career now as he is determined to write a new chapter by making a bond with Teik Chai.
Soon Hock thinks he will be able to set his priorities easily and hoped that there will be more financial benefits in playing as an independent or sponsored player.
He said, “I am looking at a more flexible way of doing well in my badminton career. As a professional, I will have more freedom to manage my time and, at the same time, I will be able to make money too.”
Now the newly formed duo Soon Hock-Teik Chai will try to forge a fruitful partnership in the Malaysia Open which is starting in Johor Baru from May 1, 2012 and the seasoned Doubles player hoped that they will end at least in the quarter-final round of this
Grand Prix event.
