ok I'm starting my prerequisites in January and then heading to the the nursing program to get my Associates in nursing,

once finished i want to get my BSN and then from there work a while and i want to basically end up being a nurse practitioner

and my question(s) are,

do you have to have your MSN to be a NP?

how many years of schooling will it take to end my career as a NP?

will my career as a NP be worth the schooling and time?

do they have a BSN to NP program?

would it be better to be a ARNP?

  1. First question is yes you have to have your masters to be a NP. Its anywhere from 6-8 depending on how many hours you take each semester, but closer to the 6 years. You do have to have a bachelors to get into a NP program because they are going to look at prior schooling grades. There are some  BSN-MSN  programs but that generally isn't for NP but for Teachers or business.

You will make good money as a NP and not have to work  as hard for it. But you can make just as much money if you work prn or as needed and don't need benefits. I actually work with a lady who was a nurse practioner and gave it up because she made more as a floor nurse working all over our hospital.

I recommend that you look in your area and see on average how much nurse practioners are making. Compare what mangers with their masters are making and of course what clinical nurse specialits, and teachers are making, because they all have to have their Masters also.

An ARNP is basically just a nurse practitioner. It is just another way to say it advanced registered nurse practitioners, instead of just saying nurse practitioner. Just like in some states we have LPN's and other states have LVN's.

You have to ask yourself why you want to be a NP? Because you will make more money as a doctor, but generally the NP's are better at patient education and bedside care.

  2. to become a nurse practitioner you need to get your masters of science in nursing.  If you want to be able to be able to prescribe drugs you need to be a NP and get your masters.  I think it would def. be worth becoming an NP because they are almost like doctors but don't need as much schooling.  You can make up to $100,000!
