Sophia Batchelor captures Women’s 200m butterfly gold – New Zealand SC Championships
Sophia Batchelor of AquaGym Swim Team-CB captured gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly in 16 and over age category on first day of the State 2012 New Zealand Short Course Championships at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Wellington on Sunday, September
30.
The 17-year-old Batchelor stifled hopes of her opponents in the distant butterfly discipline where she showed no mercy to her challengers and cruised her way to the finishing wall for the title.
Her tremendous pace coupled with her strong determination, placed her comfortable ahead of her opponents as she snared the crown of the event by producing a time of 2 minutes and 11.91 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Samantha Lee of Capital Swim Club-WN, who stayed one and a half body length away from her and surfaced on wall for second position by producing a time of 2 minutes and 13.56 seconds.
The silver medallist was trailed by Charlotte Webby of Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club-TR, who remained just a half body length behind and stepped on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 14.07 seconds.
Subsequently, Webby remained in a lead of more than three body lengths over her following swimmer, Lauren Coetzee of Capital Swim Club-WN, who ended her race in fourth best place by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 17.36 seconds.
Coetzee enjoyed an advantage of full body length over Helena Gasson of Thames-WK, who transpired on the finishing blockade as fifth best finisher by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 18.23 seconds.
Sixth best spot of the event was obtained by Grace Sommerville of Ashburton Swim Team-ED, who was 0.14 seconds apart and reported a time of 2 minutes and 18.37 seconds.
Sommerville was chased by Melita Raravula of Northwave Swim Club-NL, who secured seventh place by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 19.49 seconds.
Last spot of the event was obtained by Kimberly Richter of Howick Pakuranga-CO, who posted a time of 2 minutes and 19.63 seconds.
Furthermore, Batchelor was happy with her gold finish in the tournament and collected medal after the race.
