Sophia Batchelor earns Women’s 100m butterfly gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Sophia Batchelor of AquaGym earned gold medal of the Women’s 100m butterfly on opening day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Sunday, March 17.
The 17-year-old Batchelor showed no leniency to her opponents and cruised her way to the finishing end for gold medal. With her astonishing pace, she managed to outperform her toughest challenger and secured top spot on the podium.
Batchelor faced strong competition from her foregoing finisher and cruised her way towards the wall for first position with an effort of 58.84 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Samantha Lee of Capital Swim Club, who was 1.01 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and hit the wall for silver medal with the timing of 59.85 seconds.
The second best finisher was trailed by Laura Quilter of North Shore Swimming, who was full body length behind and hit the wall for bronze medal with the timing of 1 minute and 00.74 seconds.
Quilter was followed by Helena Gasson of Thames Swimming Club, who was more than half a body length behind and finished fourth in the race with the timing of 1 minute and 01.47 seconds.
Fifth finest spot of the race was secured by Lauren Coetzee of Capital Swim Club, who was one and a half body length behind and posted an effort of 1 minute and 02.93 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Melita Raravula of Northwave Swim Club, who was 0.29 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 03.22 seconds.
Seventh fastest spot of the race was gained by Simone Cowling of Pukekohe Swimming Club, who was 0.19 seconds slower and hit the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 03.41 seconds.
Cowling was traced by Paige Schendelaar-Kemp of Howick Pakuranga, who was unable to upset any of her former finishers and concluded her race in eighth place by reporting a time of 1 minute and 04.49 seconds.
Furthermore, Batchelor received a huge round of applause from the audience for her splendid efforts after the race.
