Sophia Batchelor grabs Women’s 200m backstroke gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Sophia Batchelor of AquaGym grabbed gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on last day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Thursday, March 21.
The 17-year-old Batchelor continued her commendable form in the distant backstroke discipline. With her unrelenting efforts, she gained a prominent lead over her opponents and reached the wall for first position.
She faced no trouble from her closest competitor throughout the race and surfaced on the finishing end for gold medal with the timing of 2 minutes and 12.31 seconds.
The champion was followed by Kate Godfrey of Neptune Swimming Club, who was 3.15 seconds slower and emerged on the wall for silver medal with an effort of 2 minutes and 15.46 seconds.
The second best finisher was followed by JoMari Meyer of Greendale Swim Team, who was 2.13 seconds apart and surfaced on the wall for bronze medal with the timing of 2 minutes and 17.59 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Bobbi Gichard of Greendale Swim Team, who was 0.29 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and surfaced on the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 17.88 seconds.
Fifth finest spot of the race was obtained by Rima Williams of Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club, who stayed 0.57 seconds slower and hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 18.45 seconds.
Sixth position of the event was secured by Sophie Wotherspoon of North Shore Swimming, who was almost four seconds behind and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 22.40 seconds.
Seventh position of the race was obtained by Tirol Palmer of North Shore Swimming, who was 1.20 seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 23.60 seconds.
Palmer was chased by Freyah Ruri of Northwave Swim Club, who stayed 0.81 seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 24.41 seconds.
Furthermore, Batchelor received a huge round of applause from the crown for her notable pace while the position holders were invited on the podium for medals and accolades at the victory ceremony of the tournament.
