Sophia Batchelor wins Women’s 100m butterfly title: Day three – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Sophia Batchelor of New Zealand won gold medal of Women’s 100m butterfly meet on the ending day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, on Sunday, September 11, in Isle of Man.
Batchelor showered her gruelling efforts in the two-lap butterfly swim by submitting a top ranked time of 58.63 seconds for the gold medal. The 16-year-old Batchelor occupied fourth fastest qualification spot in the preliminary rounds, but her excelled performance
in the final round placed her on the top of the podium for gold medal.
She was trailed by Rachael Kelly of England, who remained 1.07 seconds behind the gold medallist and reached the podium for silver medal by posting a time of 59.70 seconds. The silver medallist was chased by Vanessa Puhlmann of Australia, who remained just
0.07 seconds slower than her former finisher and stepped on the podium for bronze medal, with a timing of 59.77 seconds.
Moments later, Puhlmann was trailed by Marne Erasmus of South Africa, who stayed only 0.65 seconds behind the bronze medallist and touched the finishing wall to complete her swim in a fourth finest time of 1 minute and 00.32 seconds. The South African swimmer
was in lead of 1.93 seconds over her following swimmer, Charlotte Bryan of Wales, as she put in her best effort and concluded her sprint in a fifth best time of 1 minute and 02.25 seconds.
In the meantime, Elena Sheridan of England and Zabrina Holder of Barbados ended in a draw for sixth position of the event. Sheridan and Holder were unable to escape each other on the finishing wall and remained 0.26 seconds slower than their former finisher,
Bryan, to post a same time of 1 minute and 02.51 seconds. They were trailed by Kristina Neves of Guernsey, who touched the finishing wall to produce a time of 1 minute and 02.71 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, the session completed after the conclusion of all scheduled swimming events, while the winners received medals and accolades for their astonishing swims in the respective meet.
