Sophie Madden’s U15 title is the second honour for the club
Sophie Madden won the U15 tournament and brought great honour to her club.
Madden played a great game throughout the event and stayed in the top three in all the rounds. Although, she was placed in the second position in the initial rounds, she managed to move to the topmost position in the final round.
Her win was made sweeter by the fact that she has upheld the winning record of her club. She belongs to West Essex Golf Club, a prestigious club that is well known for its talented young members.
Last year, the U15 title was won by Gabriella Cowley after a tense final round. The history appeared to repeat itself in the Delamere Forest golf club, when Madden lifted the cup after a tough game in the final round of the U15 tournament.
Sophie Madden is well aware of the connection. Talking about the coincidence after the match, she said, “I wanted to follow in Gabby’s footsteps, we are really close friends and from the same club, so it’s great”.
Her win was not easy. She won by an extremely narrow margin of just one stroke. The second place holder, Alice Hewson, was tagged as the winner early in the event because of the great form she was in.
Alice Hewson led the event till the final round. Madden started the final round in the second place, right behind Hewson.
Observers had predicted that Hewson will continue her great performance and will lift the cup with Madden in the second or third place.
With a three-stroke deficit in Madden’s scorecard, these predictions appeared to be on target. When the final round started, Madden further slipped down the leaderboard because of a string of bogeys and the lead widened to six strokes.
However, Sophie recovered just in time, on the back nine. These holes saw Madden in great form. She blazed through the holes and ended up in the top most position.
This win adds another entry into Madden’s growing list of wins. She has gained enough experience to make into the top amateur tournaments and play alongside the top players.
