Sophie Pascoe secures Women’s 200m IM gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Sophie Pascoe of New Zealand secured gold medal of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) in SM10 category on day one of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 30.
The Dutch swimmer became the centre of attention for everyone, as she lowered the Paralympic record of the event. She faced no trouble from her opponents throughout the swim and sprinted her way towards the finishing blockade for gold medal.
With her incredible pace, she remained considerably ahead of her toughest challenger and hit the wall for gold medal by posting a time of 2 minutes and 25.65 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by Summer Ashley Mortimer of Canada, who stayed 6.43 seconds slower from her former finisher and reached the podium for silver medal by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 32.08 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Meng Zhang of China, who remained 1.87 seconds slower and stepped on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by producing a time of 2 minutes and 33.95 seconds.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Katherine Downie of Australia, who stayed 0.69 seconds slower from her former finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 34.64 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was chased by Nina Ryabova of Russia, who was one body length behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 35.65 seconds for fifth position.
The Russian swimmer was chased by Aurelie Rivard of Canada, who stayed two body lengths slower from her preceding swimmer and transpired on the wall as sixth fastest swimmer with a timing of 2 minutes and 37.70 seconds.
Rivard was traced by Harriet Lee of Great Britain, who stayed considerably slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 39.42 seconds.
Eighth position of the event was obtained by Lee’s teammate, Gemma Almond, who remained three body lengths apart and clocked a timing of 2 minutes and 42.16 seconds.
Furthermore, Pascoe was delighted with her astonishing efforts in the IM event and raked medal after the race.
