Sophie Taylor and Lachlan Wells win gold in swimming events – Australian State Age Championships
Sophie Taylor of New South Wales (NSW) and Lachlan Wells of Victoria (VIC) won gold medals of 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle in their respective age groups, on day two of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships. The session ended on
September 18, at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
Taylor demonstrated a scintillating effort in the 200m event and occupied the title of Girls 13-14 years old group. She improved the age group record by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 01.95 seconds. Her time was nearly one second under the previous mark
of 2 minutes and 02.81 seconds, set by Remy Fairweather of Queensland (QLD) in 2010.
Silver medal of the event was obtained by Chelsea Gillett of QLD, who remained 1.50 seconds slower than Taylor and reported a time of 2 minutes and 03.45 seconds. Taylor’s team-member, Paris Zhang emerged on the podium for bronze medal, as she posted a time
of 2 minutes and 03.80 seconds.
In the meantime, Wells captured the title of 100m freestyle in Boys 14-15 years old category, by clocking a miraculous effort of 50.97 seconds. With his immaculate swim, Wells remained 0.21 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Jayke Rees (NSW), who reached
the podium for silver medal in 51.18 seconds. Rees was followed by his team-member, Jake Hodgetts, who was only 0.19 seconds slower than him and stepped on the podium for silver medal, with a timing of 51.37 seconds.
Subsequently, Leanne Wright of NSW claimed the title of 200m freestyle in Girls 15-16 years old class. Wright clocked a time of 1 minute and 59.50 seconds for gold medal of her age group. With her fascinating effort, she was 1.52 seconds ahead of her following
swimmer, Leah Neale QLD, who acquired the silver medal with a timing of 2 minutes and 01.02 seconds. Neale was 0.06 seconds ahead of her team-mate, Carla Buchanan, who secured bronze medal with a timing of 2 minutes and 01.08 seconds.
Next was the 100m freestyle in Boys 16-17 years old category, where Cameron McEvoy of QLD lowered the age group mark by posting a time of 48.45 seconds. The previous mark was made by Te Haumi Maxwell of NSW, who clocked 49.09 seconds in 2010. McEvoy was
chased by Regan Leong and Hugo Morris, who earned silver and bronze medals, with timings of 49.64 and 51.26 seconds, respectively.
The session ended after the immaculate efforts of all participants, while the winners were awarded medals for their fantastic efforts in freestyle swims, after the session.
