Sorana Cirstea jumps back to oust Olga Govortsova in the quarter-final – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
Romanian beauty starlet, Sorana Cirstea, bounces back a set down to oust the 23-years-old Belarusian starlet, Olga Govortsova, in the quarter-final clash of the Barcelona Ladies Open on Friday. Both players played extremely well
with the deserving player taking the win 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in just four minutes to two hours time period.
Both players were squaring off for the second time in their professional tennis career and the 22-years-old Romanian was able to bag the wins on both the occurrences. She started the match with a serve hold. The same phenomenon
was repeated by both players in the following three games that kept the scores tied at 2-2.
However, the opening finally arrived for the 83rd ranked Belarusian in the fifth game. She broke her opponent’s serve and took the lead; consolidated it with a serve hold and mounted pressure on her rival with another
successful breakpoint. She was tested in the final game of the set but managed to escape scare and took the opening set with ease.
Cirstea was not going to go down so easily. She started the second set at a high-note with a breakthrough in the second game. She cruised away to a lead of 4-1 in the meantime and broke serve for the second time to register a day
light between the scores of 5-1. She bagged the final serve game with ease; dropping no points and enforced the third set into play.
A swap of breakpoints at the start clearly depicted the pressure on both players. Govortsova was the first one to hold her serve and reverse the pressure back on her rival who failed to handle the situation. The Romanian lost another
game and went down 1-3 in the final set that hinted towards another majestic upset for the Belarusian.
However, the tables were turned upon the Belarusian player in the following game that helped her rival to diminish the trail and level the scores with a serve hold. The momentum suddenly swirled in her favour and she bagged another
breakpoint in the meantime forcing her opponent to go down 3-5 after having a lead of 3-1 in the beginning.
A blistering comeback that witnessed five successful games on the trot for the Romanian booked her a spot in the last four players of the tournament. She will be up against the third seed Slovak, Dominika Cibulkova, in the semi-final
clash on Saturday.
