Sorana Cirstea routs Stefanie Voegele to reach the second round – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
Third seeded wild card, Sorana Cirstea, needed three sets to stomp over the Swiss competitor, Stefanie Voegele, at the Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey Open 2012 on Tuesday. Cirstea recorded a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 success against her fellow 21-year-old to advance into
the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International tournament taking place from 20th to 26th February in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Romanian went far to pull out the victory in one hour and 50-minutes in their third meeting at this late night match. She not only improved to a 3-0 record in the head-to-head series against the world number 128 but also booked a place in the round of
16.
Bidding for her second WTA career title at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club, Cirstea made quick in-roads despite spilling more double faults and suffering the first blow in the opening game. The Romanian recovered in the second game and held remaining serves.
She then earned the breakthrough in the eighth game and bagged the opener with a 6-3 win.
The Swiss hit back with a brilliant reply in the second set. She lost her serve in the opening game but wiped out the following three games consecutively. Apart from losing her serve for a second time in the fifth game, Voegele maintained her intensity and
pocketed the remaining three games, eventually sealing the equaliser by winning six games to two.
Ranked 48th in the WTA rankings, Cirstea found her rhythm once more in the final set. She leaped at 3-0 with two breaks of serve and despite losing her proceeding three serves, the Romanian capitalised on another break chance in the ninth game
to take the lead again. The Romanian youngster levelled the scores again but earned the breakthrough in the 11th game, consequently winning the decider with a 7-5 score line.
Next up for the Romanian is the Hungarian contender, Timea Babos, who eased past the local wild card entrant, Ximena Hermosos, in straight sets to set-up this battle. Babos defended five out of six breakpoints she encountered and cashed four out of seven
break opportunities to seal the deal with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
