Sorana Cirstea topples Ayumi Morita in opener – Bank of the West Classic 2013
Romanian star, Sorana Cirstea, got the better of the Japanese challenger, Ayumi Morita, in straight sets at the Bank of the West Classic 2013 on Monday. She notched up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the Japanese to power into the second round at this WTA Premier event being held in Stanford, United States of America.
Seeded fifth in this event, Cirstea made a dismal start in both sets. She gifted away her opening serves in both sets and trailed. However, she unleashed her true colours afterwards and ultimately sealed the deal in straight sets. The contestants had previously battled each other at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia and after securing this victory, the Romanian avenged her last loss and extended lead in their head-to-head series by 4-2.
"I'm really happy with the way the match went," the gorgeous Romanian commented in a courtside interview after stealing the show. "It was my first match back on the hardcourts and she's a really great player, and the last time we played in Rome I lost quite badly - so going into this match I knew it wouldn't be easy, and I'm quite happy with my overall performance, especially since, like I said, this is the first tournament back on hardcourts for everybody. I was down 2-0 and 40-0 in the second set - so I was almost two breaks down - that was a key moment in the set.”
Cirstea made a sloppy entry in this match and suffered the first blow in the opening game. She snatched her break back in the very next game but failed to hold on, eventually trailing at 1-2. However, the Romanian sought her rhythm afterwards and reeled off five straight games, to win by six games to two.
Ranked 32nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Cirstea lost her opening serve again in the following set and fell at 0-2. However, she went berserk and stroked out six consecutive games, subsequently clicking the set with a 6-2 win.
